Short Games
  • At the start of each season, before Daylight Savings Time (DST) starts, we play some games that have to be called because of darkness. There are some rainouts each year, and of course minor's games usually don't go the full six innings. So it helps to know who the winner will be if the game stops early
  • The rule book makes this a lot more complicated than it needs to be (4.10 thru 4.12). The following rules of thumb cover the possible situations:
    • If the game has completed at least four full innings, then:
      • The home team wins if they were ahead at the end of the last completed inning, or when the game stopped
      • The visitors win if they were ahead at the end of the last completed inning, and when the game stopped
  • All other situations are suspended tie games. These are:
    • Tied at end of last completed inning, tied when game stops
    • Tied at end of last completed inning, visitors are ahead when game stops
    • Visitors ahead at end of last completed inning, tie score when game stops
  • If the game ends during the bottom of the fourth, then:
    • The home team wins if they are ahead
    • The game is a suspended game if the home time has tied the score by scoring in the bottom of the fourth. [4.10(c)(3)]
  • If the game is a suspended tie game, ask the scorers to be sure to save the lineups and score sheets, as they have to be the same when the game restarts (4.12)
  • If the game ends and is never completed, it goes into the record books as a tie
