The Serra Little League 8U Tournament Team turned in an impressive showing at the 2012 Lakewood Memorial Day Tournament over the weekend, taking 2nd place. The tournament showcased 16 teams from throughout the Bay Area. Serra's 12-man squad won 6 straight games over the three-day event, before falling to the Half Moon Bay Pirates in a tight 10-7 game in the tournament championship.

Following the veteran leadership of 4 returning starters, Serra had 8 players making their tournament debuts. Collectively, the team played solid defense throughout the tournament and were aggressive on the base paths.

The boys defeated Moreland Black and Sunnyvale National twice in bracket play on Saturday and Sunday to take the top seed heading into the single elimination playoff round on Monday with their 4-0 record.

Serra moved into the tournament semi-finals with a solid win over the Los Altos LL Red team in the morning quarter-finals. The bats were lively, as Serra plated 11 runs in the shutout victory.

Team defense was the key to a 5-1 win in the semi-finals, as Serra advanced past a tough Redwood City Rays A squad. The Rays opened the game with multiple hits, but Serra gunned down a runner at the plate to end the 1st inning without any Rays crossing home plate. The game was accented with a towering home run blast by Blake Rogers that cleared the left field fence.

In the tournament finale, Serra opened the game with a pair of runs, but Half Moon Bay countered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. The Pirates would extend their lead in the 2nd inning with a home run of their own to push the gap to 6-2.

Serra rallied and put up a 5-spot in the top of the 5th inning to take a 7-6 lead, but the Pirates countered with 4 runs in the bottom of the frame to jump back out top. Half Moon Bay's defense played exceptionally to close out the tournament.

An exhausted Serra squad gathered in the middle of the diamond to collect their well deserved trophies for their 2nd place finish. The coaching staff was extremely pleased with the quality of play throughout the tournament.
