Serra Celebrates the 2013 Season

Serra Little League closed out the 2013 season with its annual Closing Day Ceremonies at Serra Park on Saturday. The league recognized a number of volunteers and players to cap a very successful 2013 season.

League President John Tracy spoke for about an hour, praising all the hard work that's gone into making this season a reality. Parent volunteers are the backbone of the league, so the league wanted to take a moment to thank everyone for their contributions this season.

John also spoke about the fact that several existing board members are aging out as their children's little league careers come to a close. If you're interested in filling a board position, please contact John.

The league also presented two awards for contributions by two key contributors this season. Lindsey Robinette was honored with the Bob Bernhardt Award, which is awarded annually by the Serra LL Board of Directors for outstanding contributions to the league. Coach Robinette has been involved with Serra Little League for the past 12 years as a parent volunteer, manager, coach and board member.

Alan Barr was also recognized by the Umpiring Crew, with the Serra Umpire Green Shirt. This is an award presented to Serra Umpires for outstanding work in the field.

The league introduced its newest division this season, with the Challenger Nationals making their debut. This program was such a resounding success, that the league announced that they hope to field two Challenger teams next season. Challenger players and those Majors and Minors players that assisted as Challenger Buddies were recognized for their contributions to the development of this program this season.

The Majors Athletics were recognized for their Majors League Championship with 1st place trophies. The Majors Rangers also received their awards for their 2nd place finish this season.

The Minors Championship was decided in a game following the Closing Ceremonies with an exciting 8-7 final that ended with the potential tying run being thrown out at the plate. The Minors Pirates held on after the Minors Diamondbacks had runners on 1st and 2nd with two outs in the final inning. A base hit to right looked as if the game would be tied, but the Pirates made a play at home to end the game.

Both the 10U and 8U Friendship Tournament Teams were recognized for their achievements this season. The 10U team advanced to the semi-finals of the Briarwood 10U tournament two week ago, and the 8U team qualified for the semi-finals of the Lakewood Memorial Weekend Tournament. The 8U team will play in three additional tournaments this summer.

All Star selections were also recognized during Closing Ceremonies. Teams were announced for 9/10 All Stars, Minors Internal North and South All Stars, and Farm Internal East and West All Stars.

Finally, the league recognized those 12 year-old players who have played continuously with Serra Little League since T-Ball or Pioneer.
