Pirates show us how it's done
With the 2015 Little League Season
in full swing, the league wanted to recognize one of the newest additions to
the league. In 2013 Serra added its Challenger Division which is an adaptive
baseball program for boys and girls with physical and developmental challenges.
Serra is one of the many Little Leagues from around the country that offers a
Any boy or girl ages 4-18, or up to age 22 if
still enrolled in a school program, with a physical or developmental challenge
may participate. Flexibility and adaptability are key during Challenger games.
Games are typically 1-2 innings long and last about an hour. All players play
defensively and bat every inning.
As Challenger players are also
learning the game of baseball, "Buddies" are assigned to assist in the areas of
batting, base running and defense, but only as needed. Serra partners peer
athletes who are participating in Serra's Majors Division or higher as player
There are currently over 900 Challenger programs in 10
countries around the world. Over 30,000 athletes participate in the Challenger
Division every year. Serra's Challenger Division is directed by Jeriann Hirsch,
who has led the program since its inception three years ago. Jeriann also
serves as the Manager of the team, the mighty Serra Pirates.
games are played at Serra 1 on Sundays at 2pm. The Pirates hit the road for
four games against teams from around the South Bay. They played the Branham
Pirates last Saturday for their second home game of the season before a packed
The Pirates return to Serra on April 12th to face the
Sunnyvale Rockies after traveling to Menlo Park on March 29th. Come on out on
the 12th and enjoy a hot dog at the snack shack and enjoy some great baseball.
