Serra Little League News
Serra Pirates show us how it's done

With the 2015 Little League Season in full swing, the league wanted to recognize one of the newest additions to the league. In 2013 Serra added its Challenger Division which is an adaptive baseball program for boys and girls with physical and developmental challenges. Serra is one of the many Little Leagues from around the country that offers a Challenger program.

Any boy or girl ages 4-18, or up to age 22 if still enrolled in a school program, with a physical or developmental challenge may participate. Flexibility and adaptability are key during Challenger games. Games are typically 1-2 innings long and last about an hour. All players play defensively and bat every inning.

As Challenger players are also learning the game of baseball, "Buddies" are assigned to assist in the areas of batting, base running and defense, but only as needed. Serra partners peer athletes who are participating in Serra's Majors Division or higher as player buddies.

There are currently over 900 Challenger programs in 10 countries around the world. Over 30,000 athletes participate in the Challenger Division every year. Serra's Challenger Division is directed by Jeriann Hirsch, who has led the program since its inception three years ago. Jeriann also serves as the Manager of the team, the mighty Serra Pirates.

All home games are played at Serra 1 on Sundays at 2pm. The Pirates hit the road for four games against teams from around the South Bay. They played the Branham Pirates last Saturday for their second home game of the season before a packed stands.

The Pirates return to Serra on April 12th to face the Sunnyvale Rockies after traveling to Menlo Park on March 29th. Come on out on the 12th and enjoy a hot dog at the snack shack and enjoy some great baseball.

If you are interested in finding out more about Serra's Challenger program or would like to volunteer to help with this program, please contact Coach Jeriann via email or checkout the Serra Challenger webpage.
