Serra to Host Jr Homerun Derby Contest

Welcome to the inaugural year of the Major League Baseball® Jr. Home Run Derby™ hosted by Serra Little League. We will be having a free competition for kids at Serra Park to show their hitting abilities, with the opportunity of competing at a National Finals during MLB® All-Star Week™.

Boys and girls are divided into two age divisions: 12U and 14U, and will have the chance to advance through three levels of competition. The Local Champions from both age divisions will advance to the Regional Level, and the Regional Champions will advance to the National Finals, which will take place during the 2016 MLB® All-Star Week™ in San Diego, CA in mid-July.

All participants must bring a copy of their birth certificate and have their parent or guardian fill out a registration/waiver form prior to the start of the competition. Forms can be printed out at JrHRD. For questions concerning the competition, please contact Nelson Chung at train@serralittleleague.com

Derby Rules:
  1. Pitches will be delivered from a pitching machine.
  2. Speed of pitches will be 40 mph.
  3. Each batter will have 3 pitches to calibrate the pitching machine location before their at-bat and will not be able to adjust once done.
  4. First round - each batter will receive 10 pitches total.
  5. Hitter with the most homeruns at the end of any round, wins the competition. e.g. If one player hits 10 home runs in round one, and no other player matches that total, that player wins the competition.
  6. If there is a tie between players with the most home runs at the completion of a round, those players will advance to a subsequent time breaker round. Only the players who tied for the most home runs in a round advance to a tie breaker round.
  7. If a tie breaker round is required, players advancing to the first tie breaker round will receive 5 pitches. (Allowing for pitching machine adjustment, 3 pitches). If a second tie breaker round is required, players will receive 3 pitches. If a 3rd tie breaker round is required, players will receive 1 pitch. Subsequent rounds will provide 1 pitch to each player in a sudden-death format.
  8. All players in a round will receive their full allotment of pitches for that round, unless there is no mathematical chance of them tying or exceeding the number of home runs hit by a competitor in that round.
  9. All rules are subject to change at the discretion of the derby organizer.
The champions information will be submitted to the www.JrHRD.com website.

Jr. HRD Headquarters will provide Regional Competition information to all Local Competition Champions, and participants must confirm their spots to attend. Regional Competitions will be located throughout the United States (8-10 sites) on pre-determined dates and locations.

Please note: Local Competition Champions are responsible for their own travel arrangements to Regional Competitions. Serra Little League is not responsible for travel costs to any round.
